lately i've been having trouble thinking in anything but list-form. this is probably due to the fact that, since i've gotten home, i've been forced to itemize / prioritize / curriculumize / classifieds-ize / etc. not to mention the fact that my vocabulary has been reduced to essentially that which is encompassed in one-inch-by-two-inch work ads boxes. that is to say, unsuccessfully succinct. but, regardless:
ĝ and naaw i don't want to see your thongs / i kinda like them old-school cute regular drawers / and i will pause for your cause : heehee
ĝ holy shit! mark told me last night. let's hope they're collecting insurance money for a bigger and better and more daring reopening, and not to cash in and leave us at the mercy of this whole ohio state mom-and-pop buyout.
ĝ sparklehorse is going on tour throughout the u.s.! hopefully they'll swing by this time around. you can read about it here, just scroll down.
ĝ news of replacements reissues are also pretty exciting. just because. at least, it gets the 'mats back in the papers.
ĝ still waiting for the above-linked publication to review amnesiac. do not read the review in entertainment weekly: it smacks of self-important trash-talk. new album gets compared to yes (the band) over and over and over again. author's credibility is instantly zapped. also mentions "lo-fi rhythms," and i want to know, what in hell is a lo-fi rhythm? grrr. in fact, read it and write them nasty hate-mail in response. it'll distract from survivor coverage for a (short but precious) while.
ĝ 'No, I don't mean that. I think it is time.'
"'Why?'
"'Because it has happened. It is always time when it happens.'
"'But some of our best critics say it's not time.'
"'I know they do. However, they are wrong. It is simply not their time, that's all.'
"'How do you mean?'
"'I mean, their time is critic's time. The book is creator's time. The two times are not the same.'
"'You think, then, that the critics are behind the time?'
"'They are behind creator's time, yes.'
"'Then they may not see this book as the work of genius which you say it is. Do you think they will?'
"'I can't say. Perhaps not. However, it doesn't matter.'
"'Doesn't matter? Why, what do you mean?'
"'I mean that the thing is good, and cannot be destroyed. Therefore it doesn't matter what anyone says.'"
thomas wolfe. you can't go home again.
my mom just came back from the office, with groceries and an article from a caracas online journal about my semi-estranged grandfather. usually i scoff him away, but this time i was interested -- am interested. because we're all getting older and, i'm finding out more and more every day, nobody's story affords the decisive account. in the 70s in spain my grandfather had a tv program in which he interviewed notable spanish and latin writers, and the article comes with the occasion of their video release. someone is interviewing him, and he says [El panorama literario actual] es muy bueno pero es menos espectacular en el sentido de que no ha habido otra generación que haya sido rompedora, no hay ya esas inmensas personalidades arrolladoras; hay que darse por satisfecho con lo que tenemos y esperar a que de esos padres salgan hijos literarios igualmente fértiles e inspirados. sometimes i venture to wonder if this man who's talked and charmed his way through lives has ever thought of me when formulating these thoughts. i would guess the answer is no. but in the way that strong dislike is tied to something missing and something necessary, i can't quite stop hoping.
