i saw this on her dland and i couldn't help myself. i've been thinking about answering these questions throughout the whole busride home.
1. Your favorite song with the name of a city in the title or text.
"first we take manhattan," leonard cohen
2. A song you've listened to repeatedly when you were depressed at some point in your life.
"thinking about you," radiohead. i remember putting this on repeat for what seemed like hours once while i moped. also, sparklehorse's good morning spider got me through a bad time in an airport a few years ago.
3. Ever bought an entire album just for one song and wound up disliking everything but that song? Gimme that song.
well, i didn't buy it, it came with my magnet subscription. "way out west," verbena.
4. A great song in a language other than English.
"nessun dorma," puccini
5. Your least favorite song on one of your favorite albums of all time.
"eternal life," grace, jeff buckley
6. A song you like by someone you find physically unattractive or otherwise repellent.
"don't stop till you get enough," michael jackson
7. Your favorite song that has expletives in it that's not by Liz Phair.
"don't push," sublime
8. A song that sounds as if it's by someone British but isn't.
i can't think of a single one. only british bands that sound american, like def leppard or led zeppelin. hmm. maybe i lack imagination.
9. A song you like (possibly from your past) that took you forever to finally locate a copy of.
well, there was this austrian yodeling cassette that i used to LOVE when i was little, and it took me years and a couple of moves to find it among boxes and other wreckage. but things are relatively easy to find nowadays, with the internet and all.
10. A song that reminds you of spring but doesn't mention spring at all.
"war on war," wilco
11. A song that sounds to you like being happy feels.
"peg," steely dan
12. Your favorite song from a non-soundtrack compilation album.
"fleeba," mu330, from american skathic iv. i think it's the only non-soundtrack compilation album i own.
13. A song that reminds you of high school.
"cherub rock," smashing pumpkins. "w.m.a.," pearl jam. "take it easy," the eagles. "in my life," beatles.
14. A song that reminds you of college.
"blue monday," new order.
all of bigfoot's dark old days
all of guided by voices' do the collapse
the south parkmovie soundtrack.
15. A song you actually like by an artist you otherwise dislike.
"brass in pocket," pretenders
16. A song by a band that features three or more female members.
"deceptacon," le tigre
17. One of the earliest songs that you can remember listening to.
"20/20," george benson
18. A song you've been mocked by friends for liking.
def leppard in general. milli vanilli in general. and yes, i cringe to say it, but . . . dave matthews.
19. A really good cover version you think no one else has heard.
well, duran duran did a stellar cover of "perfect day" by lou reed, which even lou reed said was better than the original, but people have probably heard that one. (duran duran do really good covers. just listen to thank you.)
20. A song that has helped cheer you up (or empowered you somehow) after a breakup or otherwise difficult situation.
let's do albums instead.
siamese dream, smashing pumpkins
gentlemen, afghan whigs
good morning spider, sparklehorse
pink moon, five leaves left, nick drake
aidalai, mecano
grace, jeff buckley
